Monson - Mary Hart Murphy, 84, died peacefully at home on Saturday, February 13, with her large and devoted family at her side. Mary was born in Amherst March 7, 1931 to the late Francis and Margaret Kelley Hart. Since 1956 Mary has been a resident of Monson where she was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church. Mary was a remarkable woman who exemplified the virtues of strong character and hard work. Her greatest joy came from time spent with her family. She was ever involved in the lives of her eight children and twenty three grandchildren and she will be sorely missed by all.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Thomas B. Murphy in 1988. She leaves her children Thomas F. (Margaret), Peter J. (Maureen), Benjamin H. (Nancy Carver), William F. (Christine), Julia Murphy McLeod, Catherine Murphy, Mary Murphy-Hedspeth (Ronald), Margaret Murphy Miller (Christopher) of Monson, and 23 grandchildren: Sarah, Benjamin, and Abigail Murphy, Ryan, Sean, and Lauren Murphy, Benjamin, Kelley, Catherine and Madeline Murphy, Patrick, Michael, and Jonathan Murphy, Daniel Lusier, Meaghan, Thomas, Jennifer and Mathew McLeod, Emily, Timothy, Liam, and Luke Hedspeth, Paul, Peter, and Elizabeth Miller. Mary also leaves two sisters: Geraldine Hart Smyth of South Hadley and Regina Hart Gulliver of Amherst, sister-in-law Joan M. Hart of Amherst, several cousins, nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her brother Edward J. Hart of Amherst in 2001.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary will be held Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 11am in St. Patrick's Church, 22 Green Street, Monson. Friends are asked to gather directly at the church. Burial will follow at Bethany Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Francis E. Hart Scholarship at Trust Department, Bank of America, 1 Monarch Place, Springfield, MA 01144.
