Monson-Mary Carpenter Newland, 80, passed away peacefully in her home on July 27, 2026.
Mary was born June 4, 1946 in Moberly, Missouri to Wilbur and Doris (Thornburg) Carpenter. The eldest of four children, she was raised on a farm in Middle Grove Missouri, where she developed a deep connection to her community, a great love of family and a strong sense of tradition.
Mary attended and graduated from Culver Stockton College where she met the love of her life, James R. Newland of Monson, Massachusetts. They were married in 1969 and began an amazing life together.
Mary and Jim were members of the Peace Corp and lived in Venezuela together from 1970-1971. Upon their return home, they began their family and raised their children in Monson. Mary’s love of Latin culture led her to a decades long career teaching Spanish at Palmer High School where she organized numerous trips to Spain, Costa Rica and Mexico. Mary retired in 2012 having inspired countless students.
Mary was a loyal and trusted friend to many who appreciated her directness, warmth, and wry sense of humor. She embodied a strong sense of social justice and a deep commitment to service. Her natural leadership skills benefited her community in innumerable ways. Her contributions leave a lasting positive impact on the town she loved.
Mary was a dedicated member of the First Church of Monson, Congregational, UCC where she sang in the choir, acted as Chairman and Treasurer of the Music Committee, and regularly cooked and served meals at Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen in Springfield. She was a founding member of the Down-to-Earth Gardeners, a former member of Monson School Committee and Building Committee for Quarry Hill School, and President of the Friends of the Monson Free Library for the past four years. An avid reader, Mary enjoyed being in a book club with some of her dearest friends. From family birthdays to church dinners to garden club parties, her belief in the importance of hospitality and making things special was appreciated by all.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, James R. Newland; their children, Jamie (Eliza) Newland of Hatfield, David (Denise) Newland of Monson, and Andrea Newland of Hatfield; beloved grandchildren, Desmond and Owen Newland; her siblings and their spouses, David & Marge Carpenter, Jim & Debby Carpenter, and Carol & Greg Carlos; and several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
