Monson-Nancy Johnson was born in August 1944 - joining Martha, Susan Jennifer, and Peter as the 4th child to Richard "Rich" and Elizabeth "Betty" Johnson of South Hadley, Massachusetts. A few years later she became a big sister to first Bruce then Carolyn. Nancy grew up in South Hadley center, playing in and around the Mount Holyoke College campus and enjoying many family camping adventures. As a girl, Nancy was active with the Girl Scouts, including traveling to the 1961 Scouts Jamboree in Mexico. Nancy was a skilled board game competitor, loved music and learned to play the accordion.
As a teen, Nancy began a lifelong struggle with mental health challenges, but despite this throughout her life she was known for her positive perspective. For a number of years, she volunteered at the Holyoke Library and then the Wisteriahurst Museum, helping to organize their collections. Later she participated in a daily activity program through Hawthorne Services in West Springfield. In her final decades, Nancy received wonderful care from Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services teams who loved her sense of humor, sarcasm, and wit.
Nancy made friends wherever she went and will be dearly missed.
