Hampden-Richard C. Johnson, passed away on December 22, 2025, at the age of 103. He was born on August 1, 1922, in the Village of Valatie, New York. Richard lived a fulfilling life marked by hard work. In his early years, he worked at the Cornbelt Hatchery, a chicken hatching company. Eventually he became a self-employed crane operator with Dicks Crane Service, where he contributed significantly to the construction and maintenance of the Massachusetts Turnpike. Throughout many years he enjoyed gardening and sharing the season bounty with family, friends and neighbors. He retired at an early age, enjoying his retirement years in Florida, where he embraced the warm weather and the Atlantic Ocean. From a young boy, Richard found joy in stamp collecting, a hobby that kept him engaged and brought him much happiness.

A proud Purple Heart veteran of World War II, Richard was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. His service to his country was an integral part of his life and something he carried with honor throughout his years.

Richard is remembered fondly by his granddaughter, Lena Buteau, and her husband Joseph who cared for him at home during his last 6 years. Also fondly remembered by his granddaughter Terri O’Dell and grandson Richard Dreffs in California and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjorie B. Johnson; his daughters, Helen and Renee; and his five siblings.

He will be deeply missed but cherished in the memories of all who knew him.
