Monson-William E. Emerson, 84, died Friday, October 12, 2012, surrounded by family. Born in Holyoke June 6, 1928 to the late Louis G. and Gertrude (Schortmann) Emerson he grew up in Easthampton and served in the US Army during Korea. He has been a longtime resident of Monson. He worked at A&P, Armata's, Central Market and the IGA and retired from Friendly Ice Cream Corp. After retirement he assisted at Lombard Funeral Home for many years. Bill was a member of the First Church of Monson, Congregational where he was active with the Men's Communion Breakfast and an usher. He also served on the Board of Trustees and was the custodian for many years. Bill was on the Board of Directors for the Monson Housing Authority and served as Chairman for many years.
Bill leaves his wife Mary L. (Carew) Emerson, and their three daughters Deborah E. Szoztek and her husband Paul of Monson, Patricia C. Emerson of Monson, and Rebecca E. Schofield and her husband Brian of Monson; a brother Donald C. Emerson of Easthampton; grandsons Daniel Szoztek and his wife Lisa and Steven Szoztek and his wife Caitlin; two great grandsons Edward and Joseph and his special companion "Sunny". Bill was predeceased by his Mother and Father; his step-mother Doris (Blow) Emerson and his brother Robert Emerson.
Visiting hours will be held Monday, October 15, 2012 from 5-8pm at Lombard Funeral Home in Monson. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 16 at 10am in the First Church of Monson, Congregational, 5 High St. Monson. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Monson with Military Honors. The family would like to thank the staff at Wingate of Wilbraham for their care and support. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital 516 Carew St. Springfield, MA 01104.
