Ernest Osterman Obituary

Belchertown- Ernest Osterman, 91, died peacefully at his home in Belchertown, MA on June 9, 2022, after a period of declining health.
Ernest was born July 22, 1930, in Whitinsville MA, the youngest child of Raymond and Elizabeth (Haringa) Osterman

After attending Northbridge Public Schools, Ernest enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving his country in the Korean War and earning several commendations including the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in combat.

After leaving the Marine Corps in 1955, Ernest began a career in the propane industry. Starting with only a single truck and a desire to succeed, Ernest grew his company, E Osterman Inc, to become one of the largest propane distributors in the United States.

Ernest is survived by his wife of 45 years Susanne Gray. Ernest is also survived by six children from his marriage with Elsie Osterman, Vincent Osterman (Denise) of Northbridge, Rebecca Williams (David) of Newburyport, Ruth Osterman of Palmer, Leah Osterman (Dave King) of Newburyport, Mary Landolfi (Joe) of Acton, Martha Berry (Mark) of West Brookfield; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Ernest, along with his wife Susanne, enjoyed exploring the mountains of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont and the Lowcountry of South Carolina, maintaining first a home in Danville, VT and later a residence in Okatie, SC.  Ernest could often be found manicuring his lawns, ensuring the landscaping was just so.  Ernest enjoyed listening to country music and hymns.  He always loved a new project!

The desire that the family stay connected was of the utmost importance to Ernest and for more than 20 years he enjoyed hosting an annual family reunion where he could spend some time with each family member.

The family is thankful for the loving and compassionate care that was given to Ernest by his granddaughter, Samantha Bergeron, to allow him to stay in his beloved home.

Ernest was a man of great faith and believed that his faith was the primary source of his achievements.  Interested in sharing the benefits of his success, Ernest created the Osterman Family Foundation in 2012.The Osterman Family Foundation, a charitable foundation, focuses on supporting New England’s nonprofit community through annual grant distributions. In lieu of flowers, Ernest requested that any donation to his memory be made to the Osterman Family Foundation, PO Box 67, Whitinsville, MA 01588
