After attending Northbridge Public Schools, Ernest enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving his country in the Korean War and earning several commendations including the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in combat.
After leaving the Marine Corps in 1955, Ernest began a career in the propane industry. Starting with only a single truck and a desire to succeed, Ernest grew his company, E Osterman Inc, to become one of the largest propane distributors in the United States.

Ernest could often be found manicuring his lawns, ensuring the landscaping was just so. Ernest enjoyed listening to country music and hymns. He always loved a new project!
The desire that the family stay connected was of the utmost importance to Ernest and for more than 20 years he enjoyed hosting an annual family reunion where he could spend some time with each family member.
The family is thankful for the loving and compassionate care that was given to Ernest by his granddaughter, Samantha Bergeron, to allow him to stay in his beloved home.
Ernest was a man of great faith and believed that his faith was the primary source of his achievements.
