Joan R (Swanson) Shields

Monson-Joan R. (Swanson) Shields, 89, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2022 surrounded by love of family.  Joan was born in Ware, March 23, 1933 to Albert Langlois and Edith (Cross) Swanson.  She was a graduate of Monson High School Class of 1951 and a communicant of St. Patrick's Church. She married her late husband, Thomas L. Shields in 1953 and began to raise a family.  Joan was a strong and caring woman. She enjoyed her family and friends, organizing the best family gatherings and holidays.  Her home was comforting and inviting to all, the door was always open and conversation was always available.  She made her house a home.  Joan enjoyed relaxing on the back deck, tending to her floral boxes or listening to the gentle rain.  She also loved spending days and weeks on end at the beach with family, especially her sister, Jeanne.  In the midst of her full family life, Joan worked for many years at Springfield Moulders as the head of Quality Control.  

Joan was predeceased by her husband Thomas L. Shields.  She leaves her children; Dennis T. Shields and his wife, Susan, Brian T. Shields and his wife Claudette, Thomas P. Shields, Christine E. Martin and her husband Ivan, Kathy J. Benedict and her husband John and Cynthia R. Shields; grandchildren, Jennifer Herrick, Mathew McLeod and his wife Kayla, Jared Shields, Evan Shields and fiancé, Alison, and Saoirse Martin; great grandchildren, Eva Herrick, Mathew, Kourtney, Michael McLeod as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Joan was predeceased by her sister, Jeanne Moore and brother, Earl Swanson.

Funeral services have been entrusted to Lombard Funeral Home of Monson.  Visiting hours will be held Monday, May 9, 2022 from 5-8 pm at the funeral home.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 10th with a funeral procession beginning to form at 9am at the funeral home with procession to St. Patrick's Church for 10am Liturgy of Christian Burial.  Burial will follow at Bethany Cemetery all in Monson.
