Monson- Mirja H. (Ilonen) Williams, 85, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2019 at her daughter's home in Monson, surrounded by love of family.  Mirja was born in Eurajoki, Finland July 29, 1934 to the late Viljam and Hellin (Kivinen) Ilonen. She got her chance to move to the USA when she was 18 years old via a lottery system in Finland. She later moved to the United States where she became a US citizen. Mirja was an avid gardener and could often be seen working in her gardens and watching the birds. She loved animals including horses that were often seen on the family farm, dogs and cats.  She also enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe. Mirja was an active member of the Finnish/American Women's Club.
Mirja was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Ralph A. Williams in 2002.  She leaves her children, Steven J. Williams of Monson, Karl S. Williams and his wife Cynthia of Palmer, Scott M. Williams and his partner Kim Smith of Warwick, MA and Lee Ann Williams of Monson; a brother Kalevi Ilonen of Finland ; nephews Pasi Ilonen and Seppo Ilonen and seven grandchildren. Mirja was predeceased by a brother Jorma Ilonen.
Services will be held Saturday, December 28, 2019 in Lombard Funeral Home in Monson. Visiting hours will begin at 9:30am with a service at 11am in the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made to Baystate/VNA Hospice, 30 Capital Dr., West Springfield, MA 01089. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
