Palmer-Monsignor Gregory W. Shumway, 71, was called home to his loving Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, April 12, 2023. At the time of his passing he was surrounded by the love of his family. Monsignor Gregg was born in Springfield to the late Netha A. (Bowen) Gray and John E. Shumway Sr. He graduated from Somers High School and Worcester State College before being ordained in 1997. Monsignor Gregg then served as the Pastoral Director of Bethany Charismatic Catholic Church until he retired in 2017. He was a dedicated advocate and human service worker, serving the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services for 33 years. His devotion to the Church and passion for social welfare were paralleled only by his love for his family, where he found his greatest joy in life. He was a Past Master of the Day Spring Lodge of Masons in Monson, and he was active at the Center of Hope in Southbridge. Monsignor Gregg was also an avid golfer and a lover of music, kayaking, and long walks. A Shepherd in many senses, he cared for the horses and flock of sheep at Bethany and nurtured all life at the Church.
Monsignor Gregg leaves his loving wife, Pauline I. (Nahabedian) Shumway; their children Danielle Doris Shumway and her partner Angela Bryan, Nicole Pearl (Shumway) Davini and her husband Simon; grandchildren Meghan Cassidy Topor and her partner Noah Kelly, Maxwell Gregory Bryan and Arthur Paul Bryan; great grandchild Tristyn Bee Davini; sister Sheila Noe; sister-in-law Donna Gray; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by brothers John E. Shumway Jr. and Robert C. Gray.
